One Of Only Four Tropical Fjords In The World
Golfo Dulce is a unique place on the planet where primary virgin rainforests kiss the crystal-clear waters of green and blue tones. This 55 kilometer long part of the Pacific Ocean bathes the coasts of the cantons of Osa and Golfito, hosting 21.5% of the of the country's Pacific coastal species. This site is a tropical fjord formed as a result of internal transformations of the Earth's crust, unlike most fjords that were created by the action of glaciers. The incredible depths, calm waters and tropical temperatures make it a perfect birthing place for migratory humpback whales, which is why it has been granted the recognition as the 7th Whale Heritage Site of the world and the only in Latin America.
There are four tropical fjords in the world: the Gulf of Cariaco in Venezuela; Darwin Bay in the Galapagos Islands; Kaoe Bay in Indonesia; and the Golfo Dulce in Costa Rica. Thanks to generations of conservation efforts, passionate activism and community-led responsible tourism practices, today the Golfo Dulce has many great undeveloped beaches and an incredible rainforest where visitors can encounter up to four species of monkeys such as Howlers and the endangered Titis. As well as, endemic poison dart frogs, jaguars, anteaters, sloths and a host of other incredible animals and birds that together make the Golfo Dulce an ecological hotspot!
